Testimonials
"The course was exactly the right balance of demonstrations, education, guidance and coaching. The days were well structured with short sessions of instruction so that we could build the portrait in a logical order. There were plenty of practical tips and advice on colour, brushes and techniques etc. The group consisted of a mixed range of abilities, however, the end results were all stunning, whilst still retaining their own individualism.
Luke is a gifted artist and an intuitive teacher. He has an extraordinary talent for quickly identifying areas in the painting, where subtle changes will yield the most impactful results. He is patient and supportive and these individual one to one coaching elements of the course really enhanced the finished portraits in ways that are unattainable with online courses and youtube" - Shelley Sheridan
"Luke's workshops are always well worth attending. His style of teaching is gentle but very informative. I have learnt a lot about mixing colours, especially using a very limited palette. I have also learnt much more about the materials I use and methods of creating underpaintings.
He is very patient and his instructions is absolutely worth following. He can see things quickly with his trained eye that might not be spotted by the student so readily, if at all.
Taking note of what he says is the key, and he communicates well so he is easy to understand and follow. He gives good, quality attention to each individual in turn and is also very encouraging.Although already a keen student myself, I find his workshops very rewarding and leave me wanting to do so much more. - Lucy Best-Shaw
I recently joined 10 other artists for a two-day portrait workshop led by Luke, and it was a valuable and rewarding experience. Luke’s teaching style really works for me—his laid-back, calm approach creates a relaxed atmosphere, but he also knows exactly how to build your confidence and guide you through a process that inspires growth long after the course ends.
He has a gift for bringing out the best in you as an artist. I found myself slowing down, thinking more intentionally, and gaining the clarity and encouragement I needed to keep developing my skills. The workshop was held at a fantastic venue—Workshops in Yorkshire—which added to the welcoming and inspiring environment.
I would highly recommend this course to anyone interested in learning about oil painting, the Zorn palette, or portraiture in general. The techniques and insights I gained are not only useful for portrait work but are also easily transferable to other areas of art practice. - Jonathan Little
I really enjoyed the workshop, it was well paced. I cannot fault it, your attention to support the painterly development of each and everyone of us was superb. The workshop required alot of focus and that is why I have learnt so much. Thankyou. I just wish we could have a weekly oil painting class during the week or a short course over say 6 weeks but of course then oils would be difficult to work with. I have already signed on for the landscape course. Oh I also enjoyed the music in the background. - Joy Bowhay
