About The Artist
Luke Thompson (b. 1993, Leeds) is a representational oil painter based in Settle, North Yorkshire.
Luke trained through studying the academic and traditional methods of drawing and painting, and developed his craft through working from life. During his initial training, he spent a period of time in Florence studying under the alumni of the Florence Academy of Art, where he gained an insight into the techniques and practice of the masters of the past.
Following his studies, Luke set up his studio and is now working professionally taking regular commissions, tutoring, and participating in exhibitions.
Statement
"I have always had a passion and drive to reinvent nature upon canvas, especially through portraiture and figurative painting. To search for a subtle narrative and emotion within a particular moment is a beautiful pursuit, and I endeavor to engage and express this feeling through my work.
I aim to portray the portrait, still life and landscapes in a naturalistic manner, with an emphasis on atmosphere and loose paint application. For me, a representational painting is not in the rendering of minute details, but in the capturing of fleeting moments through an expressive handling of the paint. This approach coupled with careful drawing enables me to communicate my feelings and narratives.
Working from life regularly allows me to take inspiration from nature. I thoroughly enjoy completing sketches and studies from life, and these studies guide my larger works, whether it be a portrait, still life or landscape."
